Budget for One

Some make the mistake of believing that marrying for money will solve their financial problems.  Many never learn how to budget for one.  However, the number one cause for divorce in this country is money.  And I believe it has a lot to do with how we manage it…not solely the lack of it.

As a relationship progresses, finance is a topic that should be discussed.  The conversation should be geared to how you both feel about money.  How we feel about money defines our attitude toward our personal finances.  Do we feel that money is the answer to all of our problems?  Do we go after it and depend on it like it’s a god?  Are we wise savers or emotional compulsive shoppers?

These are questions you want the man you’re dating to answer.  And in return he is going to want to know how you feel about money.  What will your answer will be?

Shine in the area of stewardship as a Christian single.  This is what God is calling for; and it will make us better prepared for the financial challenges that await us entering into marriage.  Learn how to budget for one now to prep you for budgeting for two or more (little ones) later.

Here are some great financial tips…

Give God one-tenth of your income.

This is going to put you on the right track for spiritual and financial freedom.  God isn’t asking much.  Many have spent one-tenth on a pair of shoes.  And for some of us it happens too often, and we need to watch it ladies. 😉  Our tithes support the church and the work of the ministry.  Give God your tenth and He will open the windows of Heaven and pour you out a blessing! Amen Malachi!

Don’t spend more money than you have. Follow a monthly budget.

We must find financial freedom for ourselves before we demand it of our prospective beau.  That’s fair.  When you first begin your budget, unless you’re a financial whiz, it will be difficult.  If you’re a single mom, doing a budget for one, two, or three more, can really be tough.  I am a fan of Dave Ramsey and his books have helped me in a great way.  Dave says that if you get off track your first month of budgeting, start over again the next month, and the next.  You will get better.

Pay off debt.

Think of the plans you have envisioned for your life with your new love. Remember, money is the number one battle in marriage, so help eliminate the drama by eliminating debt before you say “I do”.  When extra funds come rolling in, overcome the temptation to go on a vacation or shopping spree at the mall.  Pay extra on your debts now, so you can enjoy your income later.

Save.

Let’s look at it this way.  You eliminate debt and create wealth for yourself.  You find someone who is doing the same or willing to jump on the ship of financial integrity with you.  Imagine not going into debt for your wedding!  Imagine changing your children’s family tree!  Imagine you and your hubby loving each other on a beach in Maui in the midst of a struggling economy because you learned how to budget for one!

Give.

When we have the right feelings toward money, we won’t mind spreading our wealth.  Support your local ministry, charity, or help loved ones in need.  My momma always said, “If you want to feel better, do something for somebody else.”  It works every time.  Thanks mommy.
